Are Mormons Christian?

**EDIT:
My mom found this article "Mormonism 101"

To define "Mormons" for ya.

That title for this entry I hope will inspire some discussion. Apparently lots of folks still think we're a secretive, closed-off cult.

I want to answer questions, if someone has any, about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. No, I do not intend to preach here, nor offend! I have high respect for, well, I try and have a high respect for everybody and strongly believe that everyone deserves an equal chance.

Knowledge is power. People fear what they don't understand. For this reason many people seem to think Mormons are freaky cultists. I just want to clarify. (This is not a place for bashing anybody! Respect the rules that DeviantArt has put in place!)

Please note, we are not the FLDS church who have been in the news in the whole Texas dealy.

Okay, so to address the main question, are Mormons (which is a nickname given to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) Christian?

First
You need to define Christian.

People who believe in Jesus Christ? Jews and Muslims even believe that Jesus was at least a prophet and even then the man did actually lived.

So, how about we define it as "people who believe and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ". In that case, yes, Mormons are Christian.

Then comes the problem of how does one define Christ's Doctrine?
Some people think that Christians are people who accept the Nicene Creed (an attempt made a long time ago to unit the different interpretations of Chrisitianity) the LDS church... well, we feel God should define his laws, not man trying to appeal to what they think the people want to hear.

In high school, when I tried to join the local Christian Fellowship, I had the teacher/leader explain to me that some of the kids didn't think Mormons were Christians. She said that as long as I believed that Jesus was the only son of God and that he will save us all, that it was all fine and dandy.
Will that definition, I could see a loop-hole which didn't include Mormons: we believe that we are all spirit children of God, and the Jesus was his only begotten son in the flesh.

I heard once (RUMOR, I'd love for this to be clarified) that the RLDS (Community of Christ) changed their policies so that you don't have to believe anything about it's origins to be a member of the church. I heard that was so they could be a member of a group of "Christian" churches.
Now, if being a member of a church that was a member of this group is what it means to be Christian, than I'm happily not. I strongly believe in the Book of Mormon as a gospel of ancient American prophets, and that Joseph Smith Jr. was the man led to discover that book. If to be christian means to let go of that, than you're welcome to call me a freaky heathen!

Oh, and another thing: Mormons DO NOT practice polygamy! (the practice of having more than one wife) They did at one time, but this practice was abandoned before Utah even became a state. You have issues with the fact that they once did? All I ask is do you realize how many ancient prophets did? Abraham had Hagar and Sarah; Jacob had Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah.

Well, could you define Mormon please ? In France, there is not as many churches as there are in the USA so I don't really understand.

But according to the catholic education I received (a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away), being Christian is believing that Jesus was the son of God and that he came back from the dead.

Aside from Mormonism, every Christian church is a break-off from the Catholic church, which is okay, but the funny thing is that they all claim to be reformers, when if truth in the Catholic church had been lost, reform was not needed; restoration was, which is what the LDS church claims. It seems ridiculous to me that the mainstream Christian world continues to deny any possibility of any other scripture being kept other than the Bible, even though Christ mentioned His other sheep not of the fold that the Jews and Gentiles of the eastern world reside in. Just like in a court case, two witnesses or more are required to verify the validity of anything. We have three witnesses, the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the continuing revelation of modern times by prophets as documented in D&C and the Ensign magazine, all of which testify of Christ as the Son of God and Savior of man.

Given all these things, there is no way anybody can tell me that we're not Christian. Several of my non-LDS Christian friends have told me that I act like more of a Christian than they do, and that the other Mormons they know do too, yet some of these same friends still condemn my beliefs... Oh, and half the people that say we're not Christians only say so because their preacher told them that, not because they actually know us or have studied our beliefs in depth.

Now I'm curious, what are the primary religions in France?

Here in the US (especially on a voting year) people get extremely picking and want to know exactly what the canidates believe.

This year had gotten pretty interesting because a Mormon was one of the top Republican canidates. It was rather disgusting to see how many people in this country said that they didn't care what kind of leader Mitt Romney would make, they refused to vote for a Mormon. Their reasoning varried, but to me it seemed that they had heard nothing but bad rumors about Mormons from ridiculous places.

So this year there's been an interesting variety in canidates: a Mormon, an evangelical windbag, a former prisioner of war, a woman, a not entirely white-man, and... well, I think Edwards was in there too...

now it's down to the former prisioner of war and the not entirely white-man.

Who do you think I should vote for? I don't like either of them.

by the way, my mom found this shortly after I posted my journal yesterday. It's a sily introduction to Mormons. [link]
